Bassist Umar Zakaria returns from Boston with ‘Our Letters Home’, an artistic response to Christchurch’s mental and emotional recovery from seismic activity. It features the recorded voices of 7 musicians, originally from Christchurch, who are now based elsewhere. They share their experiences of earthquake activity in Christchurch, discussing their hometown’s recovery in duet with a live trio in 5 movements.

The responses of the following Christchurch musicians are featured: Bryony Gibson-Cornish, violist (London, UK) Isaac McCluskey, trombonist/songwriter (Zwolle, Netherlands) Kenyon Shankie, composer (Wellington, NZ) Salina Fisher, composer (Wellington, NZ) Sam Blakelock, jazz guitarist (New York City, USA) Sam Jones, producer (Auckland, NZ) Vincent Hardaker, conductor (Wellington, NZ) The piece aims to create a space of contemplation as well as excitement about Christchurch’s progress, mobilising listeners emotionally and encouraging all to reflect on moving forward to build a better future for the people of Christchurch.

‘Our Letters Home’ will be performed for the first time at Orange Studio on July 29th, featuring Umar Zakaria (electric bass), Steve Barry (piano) and Myele Manzanza (drums).

This performance is part of Umar Zakaria’s ‘The Mobilised Musician’ 2016 Project.
