The third and final night of mind blowing original Christchurch JAZZ hosted at Orange Studios.

Tim Sellars “Mukhlisa”

Tim Sellars is a Christchurch based drummer/percussionist and graduate of the CPIT Jazz School and University of Canterbury. During his music Honours study at UC, he was exposed to the percussion instruments of the Middle-East and thrived at the challenge of playing them in a traditional setting and with a Jazz ensemble.

Mukhlisa is a world music group that blends Western instruments and Jazz harmony with the Middle-Eastern percussion instruments which makes for an exciting, fresh Jazz sound. The band has performed with various instrumentation line ups and was first showcased at Christchurch’s New Music Collective “World of Jazz” night in 2012. This concert will showcase the beautiful sounds and playing of Tim Sellars (percussion), Tamara Smith (flute), Glen Wagstaff (guitar), and Michael Story (Upright bass).

Earlier this year the band travelled up to Auckland to play at the 1885 basement bar as part of the CJC (Creative Jazz Club) series. This was the bands first time playing in Auckland together and was a huge success. The band are excited to be recording their first studio album late October 2015.

Alice Tanner

Alice is completing her final paper at CPIT Jazz School while teaching and performing around the city. She found her love for composing and arranging while at Jazz School, where she majored in performance vocals. She draws her inspiration from a wide range of singers and a classical background in both piano and cello. Alice’s sound is a mix of modern jazz and soul, and features some amazing Christchurch musicians: Darren Pickering, piano, Chris Wethey, bass and Jesse Hughes, drums.
