DJs Soulprovider and Boz Boz are the hosts of Supafly, the funk and soul show that runs from 8-9.30pm on Thursday nights over on 98.5FM, also known as RDU.
The boys’ agenda is to play Funk from right across the spectrum, with the main flavour being pure, old school Funk. But they also realize they live in an age where Funk needs to attract a new audience, and so other flavours have crept insidiously into the mix! Mashups, bootlegs and edits are a regular feature, as is contemporary funk like Sharon Jones, Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Heavy, The Mighty Mocambos, and many others that a lot of people might not have heard of.
Both Soulprovider and Boz Boz have a long history DJing, and both play the Funk regularly about town. Every third Thursday of the month, the pair can be found laying down big juicy slabs of Funk at CBD bar as part of Delicious Music’s “Delicious Thursdays”. Soulprovider can also be heard every Friday night at Clink Bar, where he jams the Funk out with no mercy!
If hip hop is the bastard child of funk, sampled from a million different grooves, funk is the Godfather of all dance music. When you’re listening to other styles of modern dance music, there’s this mental processing, “Oh thats not bad, I might have a wee dance to that.” With The Funk, that choice is not there. All of a sudden, you feel your legs moving of their own accord, your head nodding – The Funk is moving you. You are having what Funkateers generally refer to as a “Funk Attack.” And it’s best to just go with it.
