with Jared Kelly
Jared Kelly aka Definite Pitch is the host of ProgNosis, the electronic dance music show that runs every second Friday from 6.30-8pm on Christchurch’s legendary radio station, RDU. Here he shares a little bit about why he loves the music he does.
ProgNosis is a live mix show that focuses on underground progressive house, tech house and techno. There are always dashings of other bits and pieces, but without a doubt its heart is progressive house in its various incarnations. You know what they say – play what you love, and they’ll love what you play!
My introduction to electronic music came in a few different forms, but when British duo Left Field released their first album Leftism, my life was changed for good. The track ‘Storm 3000′ melted my mind. Track after track I knew I’d found something special – a style that would continue to influence the way I listen to music for the rest of my life. Only a year later a friend gave me the first Global Underground CD, and that did it for me. Tony De Vit set the tone for what went on to be one of the most influential DJ mix series ever, with artists such as Sasha, John Digweed and Darren Emerson laying down some of the most highly regarded mixes in dance music. It was not only the style of dance music I wanted to hear – in 1999 it also became the music I played.
One thing I love about this music is that it is ever-changing, and always drawing on fresh elements to push the limits of what dance music can be. Nowadays a new breed of producers and DJs have taken over and are setting the bar high with brilliant tunes and mixes alike. The Balance mix series has raised the bar and artists including Henry Saiz, Guy J, Soundexile, Dale Middleton and Nick Hogendoorn are leading the charge.
This is the essence of what the ProgNosis show is all about: pushing boundaries and leading the way. Even after twelve years I love the hunt to find those melodic melodies and rolling bass. Each show takes you on an aural journey with both the artists who are currently leading the way and the new artists who are etching the future of the underground. These future maestros create the music and I weave it together live, creating the soundtrack to your Friday night.”
