MAY 02 – SORCERESS – TEACUPS

Written by on 1 May 2014

Sorceress (formerly Funkommunity) is a group founded by kiwi soul producer extraordinaire Isaac Aesili and singer Rachel Fraser, proving yet again that the new wave of New Zealand music just doesn’t stop. Their sound is sitting comfortably alongside the likes of Electric Wire Hustle, Ladi6, & Mark De Clive-Lowe.

Sorceress’s highly anticipated full length album Chequered Thoughts, sold out its initial NZ pressing in record time and has since been released worldwide. “They have that old thing. And not meaning old thing like, 60’s or 70’s. No, but old thing like late 90’s early 2000’s when every r&b/soul song had a nasty bass groove, and a snappy off-beat snare, catalyzing headnods and handclaps like nothing that came before it. That future-retro sound that we know so well from the likes of Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sonnymoon and Muhsinah — the Dilla inspired. All of the elements that make up Chequered Thoughts, are stellar, but at the core is the soulfully infectious voice of Rachel Fraser.” Okayplayer. Funkommunity spent 2012 touring Europe & Japan.
