Throwing Shapes

is the sound of a back-country road stretching into the distance; the heat shimmering off the tarmac and playing tricks with your mind. The sound of the jukebox in the corner of the diner, playing those sweet old songs while you sip your cup of coffee and watch the smoke from your Lucky Strike swirl towards the ceiling. The sound of a 3am train ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan. The back seat of a Greyhound bus on the freeway, somewhere between North and South Dakota.

Gram Parsons coined the term ‘Cosmic American Music’ to describe a particular place somewhere between Country, Soul, Rock and Roll and Psychedelia, and perhaps this is the description which best matches Throwing Shapes. A particular place where songs from the past – gospel spirituals, Appalachian murder ballads, Sun Records rockabilly and Tin-Pan Alley standards – take a place alongside avant-garde Chicago post-rock, New York noise, Austin Texas alt.country and West Coast Folk.

A sepia-tinged, nostalgic longing for AM radio’s non-existent past pulls the show together. A mystical past somewhere deep in the 1970s where Hank Williams and Howlin’ Wolf singles play alongside album tracks from Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and Aretha Franklin’s Young Black and Gifted. Johnny Cash segues into Thelonious Monk, with a reel-to-reel bootleg of Allen Ginsberg performing ‘Howl’ and the latest composition by John Cage interspersed. Throwing Shapes is a show for the adventurous and for the discerning, for the record collectors and those keen to keep a finger somewhere near the pulse of what is happening in new releases from the world of Americana and alt.country.
