Sounday The sun was out and shining as people made their way into Hagley Park unbeknown to them that they would be entering a gig that would claim the city of Christchurch as its own for the rest of the afternoon, Sounday.
As people slowly dribbled in on the hot Sunday morning, Mc Sticky Fingaz welcomed everyone to the festivities as the Mixtape Connection and Ed Musik opened up the sounds. Followed by Ed Musik were the antics of Connan and the Mockasins who went all out with seagull costumes and all.
You could really see the crowd building up as the anticipation grew for Tiki Taane’s set. Just off the back of his solo release people were anxious to hear how much he had changed after the split with his former band Salmonella Dub. But it would be unlike Tiki to un-impress, especially in his home town and that he did not pumping out a massive set with a little help from the Shapeshifter boys backing behind him!
The local feel remained as Ladi6 took the stage that also has her roots found in Christchurch. Her soulful grooves and smooth voice carried through her set as everyone took back as much of the sun as they could before it disappeared behind the stage. Then in complete contrast the rascals from Pig Out took to the stage for a perfect set to build anticipation for the upcoming legends that are Shapeshifter
When Shapeshifter took to the stage it looked as though not one part of the ground was empty as the hometown legends rocked out their fusion or drum and bass, soul, funk and jazz. The sun disappeared behind the stage but the beats just kept going leaving everyone dancing to the jam session that seemed to never end. But when it did it just kept people wanting more.
But as the day was done people started to make their way back to reality taking with them possibly one of the best days of summer 2008, their new favorite day of the year, Sounday! Hamish Crocker
