Stark, lush, hypermelodic, droney as hell, whimsical, ponderous, powerful, delicate--the vast array of palettes here is almost too much to take in. This band, with this release, surpasses quasi rivals Sonic Youth as the bellweather of american distorto-pop. "black flowers," "song for mahila," "the story of yo la tango" stun with their majesty and humanity.
